When Jamal was a child his parents were getting divorced. Through their church they knew abotu a man who took inner-city youth in crisis to his farm for the summer. They sent Jamal there and his Uncle helped Jamal create an imaginary world about a Candy Town. He came back and struggled through inner city life, managing to get into UCLA and get financial aid. Soon his life came into crisis again: his girlfriend was pregnant and his financial aid was running out and he started sensing playland phenomenon. A cryptic letter from his uncle told him how to develop his powers, but didnt answer any of his other questions. He got a wrestling scholarship and his girlfriend moved in with him and is preparing to give birth.
Jamal is a kind and sensitive man. He is a fairly humble person. He knows he doesnt have much in the way of innate talent, but he is a big believer in hard work and perserverence. His parents are religious and he respects religious people but he is skeptical about religious dogma.
During the day Jamal attends classes. In the early evening he studies and takes care of his girlfriend, who is going to give birth any day now. Late at night he wanders the city exploring his powers and trying to figure out whats happening. He is unwilling to let any of his duties or obligations slip, even if it means being exhausted all the time and drinking several energy drinks to stay awake during his classes. He feels not only an obligation to his girlfriend, but also an obligation to his parents to make a better life for himself.
Jamal is a hard worker. Most of his night-life related activities take place in the middle of the night when he cant sleep and goes on long walks. Sometimes he experiments with making his toy (a he-man toy Jamal used to pretend was the grumpy troll from the candy forest) come to life, or summoning characters from his playland (the gingerbread mayor, the root-beer lake merman, the cruel licorice dragon, the gumball machine that speaks in riddles printed on gumballs, etc.)
