Toby grew up a total tom-boy. She liked rough play with boys, sports, cars, etc. Other kids called her a "dyke" and for a while she assumed it was true, but when puberty came she found she was not attracted to girls. She never had a head for books and studying and so after highschool she got a job in construction. She had planned on going back to school but discovered she loved construction work. As someone who has been the target of hate just because she acted liek a lesbian, Toby has been involved in the gay-rights movement. Once at a pflag (parents and friends of lesbians and gays) meeting someone spoke about genderqueer. Toby found herself instantly attracted to the idea and, while seeking more information, she was initiated to the Androgynes.
Toby likes danger, sports, working with her hands and crude jokes. She is brave and exudes cocky self-confidence. She says exactly what she means and she is annoyed by anyone who doesnt do the same in return. Toby used to think there was something wrong with her, but thanks to the Androgynes she has come to believe that theres something wrong with a society that says that a straight woman has to act a certain way and like certain things.
Toby knows that her co-workers think she is a lesbian. Instead of simply correcting them shes been trying to do and say things that confuse them and make them not sure what she is. In the evening she goes to bars and clubs and tries to confuse people. She thinks everyone should be confused: its better than making assumptions about people. Tobys very curious about why people who deny gender can gain supernatural abilities. She doesnt quite believe the other androgynes conspiracy theories about the patriarchy shaping society to repress human ability, but she does know that something weird is going on and that the pro-gender-role people, knowingly or not, are getting in the way of finding out whats happening.
Toby is a very hands-on kind of person. She doesnt believe a thing until shes been there. Whenever she hears rumors of something supernatural from her Androgyne friends she wants to go check it out first-hand. Shes confident about her ability to beat up most human opponents with her bare hands and if she thinks she is dealing with something tougher than a human she will pull the crowbar from the back of her truck.
